Grades of Walks

All our walks are graded according to the difficulty of the terrain and the level of fitness required to complete them.

For an enjoyable day out, participants are advised to walk well within their capabilities. If you are unsure about which grade to choose, it is better to start at an easier grade and graduate to a more difficult one, rather than get discouraged by trying to do a walk which is too difficult for you.

In allocating the grade, account is taken of the length of the walk, the height climbed and the speed at which the hike will be done. Consideration is also given to likely weather conditions and the terrain to be covered. If the hike includes scrambling, this will be stated in "The Rambler", our monthly newsletter.

Our leaders are experienced club members who have planned the route beforehand. It is very important to always stay with the leader and the rest of the group on all walks. The leader is concerned with your safety as well as your enjoyment during the walk. if deemed neccessary the leader may appoint an assistant.

Hikes may start in forest tracks, but a walker can expect to spend most of the day on rough terrain. Nearly all hikes involve walking on boggy ground. There may be rivers to cross. There may even be a little scrambling.
